Riga Airport Named the Best European Airport in Its Category: What It Means for Property Investment

20-07-2026

RIX Riga Airport has received one of the most prestigious recognitions in the European aviation industry - the EUROPE Best Airport Award by Airports Council International Europe in the category of airports serving 5 to 10 million passengers per year.

The award was presented on 23 June during the ACI Europe Annual Congress and General Assembly in Prague. The jury highlighted Riga Airport’s ability to maintain high operational standards while developing passenger services, implementing innovative solutions and advancing sustainability.

For the real estate market, this is an important signal. International connectivity is one of the factors that directly influences a city’s attractiveness for businesses, tourists, expats, second-home owners and foreign investors.

Why the Airport Matters for Real Estate

An airport is more than transport infrastructure. For a modern city, it is part of the wider investment ecosystem. The easier it is to reach a city internationally, the more convenient it becomes for foreign buyers to own property, travel regularly, manage business interests or consider relocation. For Riga, this is especially relevant. Latvia’s capital combines a business environment, cultural life, a historic centre, developing infrastructure and a compact urban scale. A high-quality airport strengthens these advantages and makes the city more accessible to international audiences.

What the Jury Highlighted

According to RIX Riga Airport, in 2025 the airport exceeded its quality targets across key passenger service indicators, including short waiting times at check-in, security screening and baggage claim. Over the past year, the airport invested EUR 20 million in infrastructure development. These investments included terminal expansion, airfield modernisation, energy supply upgrades, and environmentally friendly energy and transport projects. The airport’s sustainability performance was also recognised. Riga Airport achieved Level 3+ Airport Carbon Accreditation and became the first airport in the Baltics to reach this level, effectively becoming a climate-neutral airport.

What This Means for Riga and Jūrmala

For property buyers in Riga and Jūrmala, international accessibility has practical value. Riga becomes more convenient for business travel, short-term stays, rental demand and relocation. This supports interest in properties located in the city centre, near business infrastructure, transport connections and high-quality urban services. Jūrmala also benefits from a strong airport. The resort is located close to both Riga and the international airport, which strengthens its appeal for foreign buyers, summer residence owners and those considering seaside property as a second home.

Investment Perspective

Riga Airport’s recognition as the best European airport in its category does not automatically increase property prices. However, it strengthens the international image of Riga and Latvia as a convenient, modern and well-connected destination. For investors, this is an additional argument in favour of a market where accessibility, infrastructure quality, sustainability and a European business environment work together. The most attractive properties remain those combining a strong location, liquidity, quality management and a clear use scenario — whether for living, rental income, business or long-term ownership.
