Return to Life: Riga Transforms Dormitory into Eco-Innovation!

27-02-2024

By 2025, it is planned that this five-story building located at 11 Ziepju Street in Riga will become an example of sustainable renovation based on the principles of the circular economy.

The main idea of the project is to maximize the use of existing materials, minimize waste, and achieve self-sufficiency in energy supply. This involves the reuse of materials, installation of solar panels on the walls and roof of the building, as well as the use of heat pumps for efficient heat management. After reconstruction, municipal rental apartments will be created here, including housing for large families, which will be an important step in addressing the issue of affordable housing in Riga. Additionally, the building will house two social care centers, emphasizing its significance for various social groups. The project also serves as a pilot experience for future sustainable construction solutions and renovations not only in Latvia but also beyond its borders. The reconstruction will focus on creating an example of sustainable renovation of multi-apartment buildings using the principles of the circular economy. Thus, this initiative will not only provide housing for those in line for municipal housing but also be an important step towards achieving climate neutrality goals in the city, which is relevant in the context of global «climate change».
